the work
Fara Limite (No Limits) is a youth climbing gym and education program located in the Jiu Valley, a valley in southwest Romania that is struggling in its transition from coal-mining. Fara Limite functions as a kind of community center for the children and teens from this area, giving them access to indoor and outdoor rock climbing, multiple after-school activities, classes, academic support, positive mentors and role-models, excursions, camps, competitions, and opportunities for personal and spiritual development. You can learn more about the Fara Limite at our website www.faralimitesdc.com.
Fara Limite is the reason that I am living in Romania. After spending the summers of 2016 and 2017 volunteering with the gym as an intern, in 2018 I moved to the Jiu Valley to be a full-time volunteer with the gym.
I have many responsibilities here, including: everyday gym work, teaching English classes, photography and communication, running the internship program, and generally (to the best of my ability) being one of those positive mentors and role models for the kids and youth that we work with. I truly love my work with all of its many joys and sorrows, its little victories and its big challenges. It is work that I feel called to pursue as a way of showing the love of Christ to my neighbors and as a way of being His hands and feet in the world.
your support
The way that our gym runs is that only locals (Romanians) are hired on salary. Those of us who are foreigners have come to work as missionaries or volunteers, which means we are responsible for raising the money we need to live.
For the first several years I was supported by a mission agency, but starting in October 2021 I am now fundraising my budget independently.
It is my goal to raise enough in order for me to have a consistent “salary” that is relatively equal to what my Romanian coworkers receive—that is, around $500 a month. You can become a patron of this work, gifting me a portion of this “salary” so that my work can be sustainable here. Even $5 a month is helpful, and any gift is greatly appreciated.
